These 6 Architecture Topics are going to Be Extensively Covered in 2018

2017 brought us several experiences that allowed us to learn new lessons, and be able to face the challenges the year 2018 has brought with it.

Better tools to work with, and new wisdom to spread around, established new topics in architecture that should be considered during the course of the current year.

These are a few of the topics that are going to be covered in 2018:

Understanding How the Youngsters Use Space

Millennials seek to be their own bosses, and the majority is looking to work from home, so it is very important for them to have a house that can adapt to a workspace.

Additionally, many of them do not seek to form a family. So the space must be modern, small, multifunctional, and minimalistic. Less is more, and they certainly know it.

The Urgency of Being on Site: An Architect’s Worst Nightmare

It is important to get used to connecting with the making of your own projects to present a collaborative and in situ approach. Remember to give advice when needed, to share a better approach on a certain circumstance, and smooth any bad thing between the workers.

Knowledge about materials and construction must be increased and we need to preserve and discuss the importance of a good design.

The Challenge of Current Architecture to Approach the Rural Context

For decades, architects have focused on cities, which only make up 2% of the earth’s surface. The future lies in intervening unused spaces, sparsely populated, semi-abandoned, and sometimes badly connected.

There is a global tendency to understand rural areas in order to incorporate their materials, traditional techniques, and lifestyle into a contemporary perspective.

Social Architecture Faces the Return of the Pendulum

Social architecture is popular with new generations. Valuing and visualizing informal architecture, vernacular techniques, and a committing to those who have been left behind in society is a trend that has been equally praised and trivialized.

Social architecture broke out in response to the local way to impart knowledge around, and all that unique attitude discipline emits.

The Architecture Graphic Timeline Representation 2.0

Nowadays, digital tools have come to lead architectural representation systems, by placing images above traditional representative methods.

However, there has recently been a new trend in social networks that merges available digital tools with the representative intention of collage: post-digital representation.

Political Architecture: Creativity Faces the Regulations and the Future of Cities

Political action is a tool to improve, incorporate, or transform creativity. An architect involved in politics is a creative activist who works on regulatory issues and who exceeds the limits to have a social impact.

There is a tendency to confine creativity around regulations, and this process will influence the future of cities as we know it.

From building that seem to be defying the laws of Physics, to the implementation of new materials and better ways to arrange the cities, the change is going to be monumental.

Based on previous experiences, we have sought to be more conscious when creating new designs that allow us to focus our efforts in the places where it is most needed, embedding the social aspect, the technology, and the existing regulatory conditions.

Arch Profile – 3 Interesting Facts about Rem Koolhaas Not Every One Knows

Rem Koolhaas is considered one of the most important architectural and urban thinkers of his generation.

Being Dutch, he was always influenced by his surroundings, built by big architects from the area.

TIME magazine included him in his top 100 of the most influential people in the world. Showing you a simple profile of one of the best architects in the world, in this article, we will tell you interesting facts that not everyone knows about him. Like his tendency to book an exotic ride in Milan on almost every luxury vacation.

    Family Is Everything for Him

His father, Anton Koolhaas, was a novelist, critic and screenwriter, who wrote the scripts for two Bert Haanstra documentaries, which were nominated for an Academy Award, to compete for the feature-length documentary category. One of his father’s films even won a Golden Bear for Best Short Film.

He also has family members who have developed their careers in the world of architecture. One of his closest exponents and influences was his grandfather, Dirk Roosenburg, his mother’s father.

Acostumed to work with Hendrick Berlage before starting his own company, he devoted himself to the artistry related to architecture. Koolhaas, also has a paternal cousin, Teun Koolhaas, who was an architect and urban planner back in the day.

    Experimenting and Trying To Succeed

Koolhaas has unsuccessfully made proposals introducing unexpected functions for certain rooms. In the project of the Seattle Public Library (2003) he proposed the inclusion of hospital units for the homeless. That is one of the reasons why he should get an exotic ride in Miami from a reputable luxury car rental agency.

From the beginning, Rem Koolhaas was ahead of his time when it came to his ideas and the implementation of his thoughts in real life.

The implementation of “Manhattanism” through several projects registered in his publication S, M, L, XL has not been carried out even if they generated a series of concepts that have become common in the most recent architectural theories.

Later, in his career, he started developing some theories about the spaces and their materialization.

Koolhaas has been harshly criticized for three of his works for being cynical. However, that cynicism can be labeled as realism about the transformation of cultural life, where airports and even museums depend so much on gift shops due to financial problems.

    What Would Future May Bring

In 2005, Rem Koolhaas founded Volume Magazine, as a way to express his thoughts and theories in a free and outspoken platform. Continuing that, he would tour LA with a limo hire every now and then and showed his appreciation for luxury vehicles.

Alongside Mark Wigley and Ole Bouman Volume Magazine, goes beyond the architectural definition of making buildings.

This magazine, on the contrary, seeks global views on design and architecture, broader attitudes towards the creation of living environments, and social structures.

Koolhaas ventured to provide the architecture for Prada. From the Beverly Hills store to the Broadway store in Manhattan, the idea of selling a brand instead of marketing it was established.

The Broadway store has museum signs that were not removed during the furnishing of the new store as if it emphasized its premises as a cultural institution.

Rem Koolhaas has an extensive career that has allowed him to win several awards for his performance in the world of architecture and design. Today, his work has been taken to all continents. We hope that you know a little more about his life and career after reading these facts that we have shared with you.

6 Tips to Graduate Architects Who Are Just Beginning Their Career

From the beginning of time, building houses and looking for shelters have become one of the crucial things to do before the sun sets at night.

Alongside this unrequited need for shelter, the more creative the person is, the better the outcome of the building design and later construction. The world of modern and contemporary architecture has produced several amazing monuments of human creativity, sensibility, and aesthetics.

This can be a source of inspiration for many designers out there, who are willing to experiment and learn all they can to become better professionals in this beautiful and fulfilling career.

Here are some tips that can help you if you are starting in that area.

    Test Technology

Great technological advances allow creating new structures that surround the world, as it was the invention of steel, back in the 19th century. The architecture was previously based on stone masonry, and implementing steel to the new structures made changes that allowed constructions to rise to new heights.

A clear example was the Eiffel Tower, which became (in its time), the highest construction in the world, at an outrageous 324 meters.

    Bend the Rules

The structures of the skyscrapers have usually been vertical. Until Rem Koolhaas and the architecture firm he directs, OMA, began to work in Beijing, China at the headquarters of its Central Television. Its innovative structure consists of a loop containing 6 parts, 3 of which are horizontal.

This new way to look at buildings, made the architects, and engineers, to think again and make everything possible for this to happen.

    Stick to Your Principles

In Germany, the Bauhaus school advocated for strict principles of minimalism and pure functionality, and its practitioners adhered to these no matter how much resistance they encountered.

Modernism is not known for producing the most cheerful buildings, but rather for intellectual integrity.

    Sketch Your Concepts

Some people mistakenly think that architecture is a purely rational art, based on engineering and mathematics, with a minimum margin for aesthetics to be presented. Sometimes this may be true, but some architects show the opposite, and it all can be seen in their sketch work.

    Traveling

Architects can be good and all, but if they don’t have enough references of work, they’ll be doomed. Think about it this way, you have to travel to visit sites and projects you love to admire on books. That’s the thing with architecture; you have to feel the space.

Next time you’re going to travel, think about every architecture project you might find in the way and you’ll have a blast every time you’re on vacation.

    Solve Problems

The great creative architects often think of problem-solving when they’re designing. This thinking is totally real.

This premise can be evidenced by the innovative Dutch firm, UNstudio, which was entrusted to work in the airport of Brussels, and its impressive design exceeded the expectations of what was requested.

    Get Noticed

In recent years, it’s fun to watch buildings with a distinctive look and see how have they become the perfect way to identify an entire city or region. An obvious example is the Opera House, in Sydney, which functions as the city’s logo.

It was designed by the Danish architect Jørn Utzon, and his cheerful design was presented as part of an international competition.

All these tips were a compilation of the work observed in the last 150 years, with emphasis on the contemporary era. However, they will undoubtedly help you no matter what your concept may be. You can also be inspired by other disciplines that will allow you to improve your designs.

The 3 Major Problems that Architecture and Overall Design Are Dealing With in 2018

When entering the architectural world, or even the industrial design field all over the globe, it’s important to know how to face any problems, and what exactly are you willing to overcome and take advantage of while putting your intellect up to test.

Recently, a group of personnel from different construction disciplines was surveyed to know a little bit more about the ups and downs they face in their specific area.

Architects, engineers, artists, and contractors were asked to indicate some weak points regarding collaborative construction processes.

Starting from the usual discussions you can have between architects and engineers, or with the different materials to use, or the last-minute design changes, here are the 3 main problems they found:

Collaborative Processes Leave Much to Be Desired

The complexity and contrasting groups that are required to build any structure create the need for good design assistance. Currently, the collaboration systems implemented are not ready to meet that need yet, and they should be.

According to research about the latest tools, they have discovered that parts are missing to achieve a simplified collaboration.

The results of a survey on the subject show that 94% of the professionals were not completely satisfied with the available tools. The survey respondents expressed the need to include the different parties at the beginning of the project with the required leadership characteristics to combine all the disciplines that take part in the construction of a building.

BIM Creation and Sharing Tolls Need Improvement for Better Results

As a result of the survey carried out, it was concluded that better coordination in real time between platforms is needed.

Survey respondents showed significant frustration with current BIM practices. The BIM and CAD Software are among the applications offered as a solution. One contractor said the Procore and the Buildingconnected tool was working very well for him.

Several designers mentioned Rhino, Revit, AutoCAD, and other well-established business tools. Other participants recognized and learned about Zahner’s use of the Dassault Systems 3DX platform.

Each discipline must determinate what works best for it. It was concluded that a better translation of significant data from the designer is needed directly in the manufacturing.

    Trust Is Imperative

The main problem in all types of projects is always the money and how it is used. And everything related to money has to do with trust. It has been noted that there is generally more trust between the developer, the contractors, and the owner, while architects must strive to gain the owner’s trust.

Creating a relationship of mutual respect will guarantee a much smoother design and construction process, and more projects awarded in the future.

Establishing and maintaining trust requires energy and time. Knowing all the parties involved will allow compliance with the obligations, which is very important. Providing open communication and education, involving the client and partners to improve the problems that concern them are key factors.

After having analyzed the main problems presented here, we hope this article is helpful for you if you work in this industry. It would be important to discuss the points above to find the best solutions in the collaborative process.

His work reflects his life, as a lot of influences from abroad are combined with a twist of Indian culture and lots of traditions.

Coming from a poor country, he decided to enrich and enlightened his traditions and found the way to express everything he feels for his land and its people, in his buildings. We will tell you his story.

    His Life Story

Balkrishna Doshi, “the Indian architect”, turned 91 years old this past August, becoming a long-lived character in the field of architecture.

Doshi has a dual citizenship. Having been born in Pune, India, he obtained the Indian nationality and the British Raj. At the time of his birth, Pune was under the command of the British government, which gave him his dual citizenship.

At the end of his studies in architecture in Bombay, Doshi traveled to France to work in the studio Le Corbusier in Paris for three years.

Then he returned to supervise the projects that the studio was running in India, and collaborated with Anant Raje and Louis Kahn, who were also developing projects in the area.

What Does It Mean To Him

Doshi thought that architecture, the connection with the city, its landscape, and all the relationship the building has with its surroundings, are all inseparable from one another. Among the things he ended up internalizing while with Le Corbusier was his wish to reunite their more “industrial” approach with big spaces full of light, as they wanted a grandiose spectacle.

Also, contrary to his contemporaries’ ways, Doshi didn’t want to use standing objects and he favored the usage of the spaces between them. This gave his work a different approach.

However, this year he won the Pritzker Prize, the biggest architecture-related award in the whole world, for his commitment and dedication to improving the quality of life in his country. Doshi, while spreading all his architectural knowledge through his building, and sending his message across the entire nation, became a well-known person in India, thanks to his willingness to preserve his roots.

He has been able to get architecture and transform it into buildings that respect the oriental culture while improving the quality of life in India.

The history of this renowned architect continues. His participation in Indian education will make his contribution to his culture transcend beyond his years of life. As well as his contributions to Indian architecture, preserving its cultural history, and making it of great value for this nation.
